Remove noise and grain from photos

Clean up grainy low-light shots and blocky, over-compressed images. Pixelyft Enhance removes digital noise and compression artifacts while keeping the texture that makes a photo look real.

Where image noise comes from

Most noise appears when a camera has too little light. Phones and small cameras raise the sensor sensitivity to compensate, which adds speckles of brightness (luminance noise) and blotches of colour (chroma noise), most visibly in shadows and plain areas such as skies.

Compression adds a different kind of damage. Saving a photo as a heavily compressed JPEG, or sending it through a messaging app, creates square blocks, banding in gradients and a shimmer around edges. Scanned film adds its own grain on top.

What Pixelyft removes

Noise reduction is part of the Enhance tool, so the same job also sharpens the image and can upscale it to up to 4K.

  • Luminance and colour noise from low-light and high-ISO photos
  • Film grain and sensor noise
  • JPEG blocking, banding, ringing and mosquito noise around edges
  • Chromatic aberration and colour fringing

Denoising without the plastic look

Aggressive noise reduction can smooth skin, fabric and foliage into a waxy surface. Enhance is instructed to keep natural texture such as skin pores and fabric weave, and never to treat a mole, beauty mark or freckle as noise.

Because grain is removed, Enhance is not the right choice when you want to keep a deliberate film look. Check fine texture at full size and compare it with your original before choosing the result.

Noise is not damage

Enhance deliberately leaves physical damage such as scratches, creases, tears and stains in place, because it treats them as part of the photograph. If an old print is damaged as well as grainy, use Restore, which repairs visible damage and can preserve or colourize the original tone.

A few useful answers.

Does noise reduction remove detail?

Enhance removes noise and sharpens in the same pass, and is instructed to keep real texture rather than smooth it away. Very fine detail that is buried in heavy noise may still be lost or interpreted, so compare the result with your original.

Can it fix JPEG compression artifacts?

Yes. Enhance removes JPEG blocking, banding, ringing and mosquito noise, which is common in images that were saved at low quality or sent through messaging apps.

Will it remove scratches or creases from an old photo?

No. Enhance keeps physical damage in place. Use Restore to repair scratches, folds, tears and fading on old photos.

What files can I upload?

JPEG, PNG, WebP and HEIC/HEIF images of up to 10 MB each.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. An account that has never paid gets a free Enhance, so you can check the result on your own photo before subscribing. No card is needed to try it.
